As we inch closer to the official launch, leaks and rumors have been flowing in abundance for Xiaomi’s upcoming Redmi 5 smartphone. The launch is scheduled for December 7.

As per the leak, the Redmi 5 largely resembles the Redmi Note 4 in terms of the design. With a metal exterior, the Redmi 5 will flaunt relatively narrower bezels and will the first Xiaomi budget phone to feature an aspect ratio of 18:9. The front is dominated by a 5.7-inch HD (1440×720) screen which is certainly a substantial upgrade compared to the Redmi 4’s 5-inch display.

Under the hood lies Xiaomi’s sacrosanct Snapdragon 625 chipset with a ‘lite’ configuration which probably just means lower clock speeds. In addition to that, it will come with 4GB of RAM, 64GB internal storage which is expandable via a MicroSD card. Although there’s a good possibility of multiple variants.

The camera arrangement will include a 12-megapixel sensor on the rear and a 5-megapixel front-facing shooter. It’s quite surprising that the company has decided to skip a dual-camera arrangement unlike the rest of the industry. Perhaps, that’s something they’re saving for the higher end models. Moreover, the Redmi 5 will feature a dated MicroUSB port, a regular headphone jack and will be compatible with two SIMs. It also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor beneath the camera ring.

One of the more disappointing aspects of the Redmi 5 will be its battery size — 3300mAh, a huge step down from the 4100mAh pack of the Redmi 4. Paired with a larger display, it remains to be seen how Xiaomi keeps up its own high endurance standards. For the software, the Redmi 5 will ship with Android 7.1 Nougat and MIUI 8.5.1.1. Of course, the MIUI 9 should be available soon enough through an OTA.

Xiaomi recently teased a smartphone launch on next month’s 5th. Various industry experts suggest the company is planning to unveil two new phones at the event in China — the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus.
