As TGP reported on Wednesday, two GOP congressmen have told the media that House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) had to have a second operation Wednesday afternoon following the shooting at a Congressional Republican baseball practice early Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Virginia that wounded him in the hip.
AP is now reporting that Congressman Scalise is undergoing a third surgery on Thursday. Scalise is reported to be in critical condition.
Republican Congressman Steve Scalise has been undergoing a third surgery after he and others were shot at a baseball practice by a man hostile to the GOP.
The Louisiana lawmaker, who is the No. 3 Republican in the House, remains in critical condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He was shot in the hip in the Wednesday morning incident and the bullet fractured bones and injured internal organs, causing severe bleeding.
It was unclear whether he had emerged from surgery as of mid-day Thursday. The hospital did not immediately provide an update, but lawmakers were informed at a meeting Thursday morning that Scalise was in surgery.
In addition to Scalise, those shot were Matt Mika, the director of government relations for the Washington office of Tyson Foods and a former congressional staff member who was shot twice in the chest; Zachary Barth, a staffer for Rep. Roger Williams (R-TX), who was hit in the leg by a bullet and was treated and released; two Capitol Police officers who were part of Scalise’s security detail were wounded in the attack: Officer Crystal Griner was shot in the ankle, Officer David Bailey sustained minor injuries and was also treated and released.
President Trump and First Lady Melania visited Congressman Scalise in the hospital Wednesday evening. The First Lady brought flowers for Congressman Scalise.
