Less than a month after losing his father, Steve Johnson has faced two tough battles so far in the French Open. He won his first-round match against Yuichi Sugita of Japan in five sets. And in the second round, it took four sets to defeat Borna Coric.

He wiped away tears during his post-match interview with Jon Wertheim, who asked how he was holding up emotionally.

“Physically, I’m OK,” he said. “Emotionally I’m a mess. I just know this is what he always taught me to just be a fighter, be a competitor so that’s what I’m going to do, day in and day out. That’s the only thing I can do.”

The scene itself after the win was pretty remarkable. Johnson emotionally knelt on the clay while Coric seemed … angry.

Johnson’s father, Steve Johnson Sr, passed away in his sleep on May 11. He was 58.
