The Nokia flagship smartphone that the company’s fans have been waiting for since a long time is finally here. At an event held in London today, HMD Global took the wraps off the Nokia 8, its new flagship Android smartphone. The smartphone features a gorgeous aluminum unibody build, said to be machined from a single block of 6000-series aluminum. It is then polished further to achieve a mirror-like finish that does look very charming. While not completely protected against the elements, the handset does come with an IP54 rating that makes it somewhat splash resistant.
Just as the leaks had revealed, the Nokia 8 sports a 5.3-inch 1440 x 2560 Quad HD LCD display with a pixel density of 554 pixels per inch. HMD Global claims a peak brightness of 700 nits, which should translate into brilliant sunlight legibility. Like most other 2017 flagships, the Nokia 8 display is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Running under the hood is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 octa-core 64-bit SoC with an Adreno 540 GPU and 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM. The smartphone includes 64GB of UFS 2.1 internal memory, which can be expanded further with a microSD card by up to 256GB.
The Nokia 8 features dual 13MP resolution cameras at the rear, with the primary sensor equipped with optical image stabilization, Carl Zeiss optics, laser + PDAF autofocus, and 1.12-micron pixel size. The secondary 13MP sensor takes monochrome shots, similar to the dual-camera setups on Huawei flagships. For selfies, the Nokia 8 includes a 13MP snapper on the front with 1.12-micron pixels, an f/2.0 aperture lens, and phase detection autofocus. When shooting 4K video with the primary camera, the Nokia 8 can capture 360-degree spatial surround audio, thanks to OZO Audio technology.
Connectivity features offered by the Nokia 8 include Wi-Fi 802.11ac dual-band, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS with GLONASS, USB Type-C 3.1, NFC, and 4G VoLTE. Keeping the lights on is a 3090mAh capacity battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 support. In terms of software, the Nokia 8 will ship with the Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system out of the box and not Android O as rumored.
The Nokia 8 has been priced at 599 EUR (Rs.45,000 approx) and will begin shipping in Europe next month. Color options include Tempered Blue, Steel, Polished Blue, and Polished Copper. The official Nokia 8 product page also lists a “Glossy Blue” option with 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage.
