It happened seven years ago, but Kenyon Martin never forgets.
Back when Martin was with the Denver Nuggets, he returned to his car after a game to discover that he’d been the victim of the all-too-popular “fill an expensive car with popcorn” prank. Martin, though, was having none of that.
He rushed back to the locker room to unleash a legendary tirade while looking to fight the person responsible for the prank. But there’s a story behind that prank, and J.R. Smith was right at the center of it.
Martin joined ESPN’s Highly Questionable on Friday and revisited the prank with stunning detail.
“I hit my unlock button on my car and it don’t unlock. I’m thinking ‘Huh. I always lock my car.’ So that’s my first thought. So, then I get to my car and I open the door and popcorn just fell out. I left the door open, I didn’t think or nothing. I turned right around and went right into the locker room.”
After finding his car full of popcorn, Martin took his jacket and shirt off, looking for a fight. He demanded that the team run the locker room tape back, so he could see who entered the room during the game to take his keys. He realized it was a ball boy, who was put up to it by J.R. Smith.
According to Martin, the Nuggets had to beg him to not go to J.R. Smith’s house and fight. They even paid to repair his car. It took a lot of convincing.
Seven years have passed, and Martin said he no longer has a problem with Smith. But wow, don’t mess with Kenyon Martin’s car. He won’t be happy.
