HP Omen 15 and Omen 17 laptops get revamped specs, pricing

HP has not been too aggressive pushing its gaming laptops from its Omen series. That, however, seems to a thing of the past with the company now starting to give a little more attention to this segment. As a part of this strategy, the company recently announced a major revamp to its HP Omen 15 and Omen 17 lineup of gaming laptops. All the new models now boast of completely revamped design and fresh new CPU and GPU options. These laptops also earned the distinction of becoming the first of the machines to sport Nvidia’s Max -Q technology that promises to boost gaming and graphics performance on lightweight, portable gaming-centric notebooks. That said, as of now, the company will offer the aforementioned Max-Q technology on only one of its models that will ship in August 2017. This particular model will be an Omen 15 that packs in a Nvidia GTX 1060 GPU for graphics. All models from the Omen series would be VR-certified as well.

Thanks to the updated design, HP has been able to incorporate larger fans on its Omen 15 series. This according to the company has resulted in a 21.8 percent increase in the maximum airflow and therefore contributes to better cooling. This is of course apart from the improved thermals that the new machines boast if. The larger 17-inch models from the HP Omen 17 series also boast if an optical drive. These models too get slightly larger fans that claim an improved maximum airflow. Other key features on the new The Omen laptops include user upgradeable memory and storage – both of which are accessible using a single door on the bottom of the unit.

All HP Omen laptops will feature its own “Omen Command Center” – a software tool that will let users customize their machines and control several aspects of the system. Note that HP still does not allow users to overclock its Omen notebooks.

The omen 15 series come in three different models with prices ranging from $999 to $1,599. Here are the details.

  • $999: Intel Core i7=7700HQ, 8GB DDR4 RAM, AMD Radeon RX 550 with 2GB GDDR5, 1080p 60Hz display, 1TB HDD
  • $1,029: Intel Core i7-7700HQ, 8GB DDR4 RAM, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 with 4GB GDDR5, 1080p 60Hz display, 1TB HDD
  • $1,599: Intel Core i7-7700HQ, 16GB DDR4 RAM, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti with 4GB GDDR5, UHD 60Hz display, 512GB PCIe SSD plus 1TB HDD

As for the Omen 17, it will start from $1,099 and will go up to $1,799 with two intermediate models priced at $1,279 and $1,599. Here are the details.
