While we’re lucky enough to live in an age where streaming content is usually readily available to anyone with access to an internet browser, there are plenty of times you’ll find yourself wishing that you could just access your favorite video and audio content when you’re not able to get online.
For those times, there are plenty of ways to convert streaming video to audio or video files. There are so many, in fact, that choosing just one option can often be more overwhelming than the actual process of downloading and converting a file.
However, if you’re mostly interested in just downloading videos from YouTube, Dailymotion, and a few other popular video platforms, Clipgrab may just be the best option available. It not only allows you to save and convert videos from several popular sites, but it includes a couple of quality of life features that other free services cannot match.
Here’s how it works:
Download ClipGrab from the service’s official website. You’ll find a full suite of download options by clicking on the “Show all download options link.” Please note that this is a free service so you may receive third-party offers during the download process. De-select any add-ons you do not wish to download. ClipGrab also accepts donations if you feel so inclined.
Once you’ve downloaded and opened the program, you should be looking at the Clipgrab home screen.
From here, you have a few options. As ClipGrab is directly compatible with YouTube, you can search for YouTube videos directly from the home screen of the program. To do so, you simply search for the video in the address bar just as you would on YouTube.
If you have found the video you are looking for, you simply need to click on it within ClipGrab. This will automatically take you to the download screen. From here, you can select the format of the clip (video or audio as well as some additional options) as well as the video quality. Once you have finished choosing your options, simply click on “Grab this Clip!” to download the file.
If you cannot locate the video you are looking, simply go to YouTube (or any other compatible website) and search for it there. Once you have found the video you are looking for, copy the URL address and paste it back into ClipGrab where you would otherwise have searched for the video. From there, follow the same steps described above to download it.
The clip should now be available in your chosen destination folder. From here, you can watch it on your desktop or transfer it to your mobile device just as you would transfer any other file. Just be sure to set the format to MPEG 4 if plan on playing a video clip on your iPad or iPhone.
One other handy feature to note is ClipGrab’s ability to automatically download any compatible URL that you copy to your clipboard. This feature can be found under the “Settings” menu and the “Clipboard” sub-menu. Here, you can ask ClipGrab to always download clipboard videos, never download them, or ask you for permission first.
If you’d prefer to not use a separate program for your video downloads, you can always head over to Keepvid and simply enter the URL of the video you wish download. The trade off here is that the video/audio quality is rarely as good as the quality of a ClipGrab download.
It’s also important to remember that many services (such as YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon Video) offer offline viewing for their subscribers. So, if you happen to have an account with these services, be sure to utilize the official offline/download options first as they are usually the best available method.
