This error dialog can appear either randomly while you are on your desktop or it will pop up right when you log in to your Windows. It might also appear at specific tasks like when using the Bluetooth but it will most likely appear at the startup.

This is error is caused by your Bluetooth drivers. The usual cause of faulty drivers is either a Windows upgrade or an update. In rare cases, it can be caused by a virus/malware. The error that you are seeing at the startup is because a startup item or service is trying to access your Bluetooth feature. Since there is a problem with your Bluetooth drivers, it if giving you this error.

As you might have already guessed, this problem can easily be solved by updating your drivers.

Method 1: Update drivers

The first thing that you should do is update your Bluetooth drivers. You can update your drivers either manually or automatically (Windows automatic driver update). You will find the steps to perform both types of driver updates below

Automatic update

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Then type devmgmt.msc and press Enter

  1. This will open the device manager with a list of software/drivers.
  2. Locate and double click Bluetooth
  3. Right click the driver and then select Update Driver Software…

  1. You will see a window with two options:
    1. Search automatically for updated drivers.
    2. Browse my computer for driver software.
  2. Select the Search automatically for updated drivers and let it process.

Once the process is done your drivers will either be upgraded or Windows will show you a message saying it didn’t find any updates. If it didn’t find any updates then we will recommend doing it manually. On the other hand if the Windows did find an update then check if it solved the issue. If it didn’t then try the manual update.

Manual update

  1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Then type devmgmt.msc and press Enter

  1. This will open the device manager with a list of software/drivers.
  2. Locate and double click Bluetooth
  3. Double click your Bluetooth driver

  1. Click the Driver tab

  1. Here, you will be able to see the driver version you have. Keep this window open.
  2. Now, go to your laptop/desktop manufacturer website and search for the list of latest drivers for your device
  3. Select the latest Bluetooth driver from the list and check if the version given on the website is the same as you have installed (step 7). If the version isn’t the same then you need to install that version.
  4. Download the newer version from the manufacturer’s website and follow the instructions given on the website to install the driver.

Once the driver is installed, you should be good to go.

Method 2: Disable btmshellex

If updating the drivers didn’t work then this method should solve your issue. Simply disabling the btmshellex will prevent it from running at the startup. This means that you won’t see the error again because btmshellex won’t run at the startup again.

Here are the steps for disabling btmshellex

  1. Hold Windows key and press R
  2. Type msconfig and press Enter

  1. Click Startup tab
  2. Select Open Task Manager

  1. Scroll through the list and look for btmshellex
  2. Select btmshellex and click Disable (bottom right corner)

  1. Close the task manager and click Ok on the msconfig window

Reboot your computer. Everything should be fine on the reboot.
