Facebook has changed a lot in the recent past, the social networking platform is now heavily relying on videos to hook the users. Parallelly the company has also increased the scope of advertisement and as a result, the volume of sponsored content has skyrocketed. Facebook seems to be determined to solve this problem and thus has announced an upcoming tweak in its timeline.
The revamped timeline will bring the family and friends to the forefront. Facebook will also prioritise posts typically generate high levels of engagements. Facebook is trying to roll back to their earlier premise of connecting family and friends. On the flipside Business Pages and organisations may see a decline in their reach, video watch time and also the referral traffic.
Mark Zuckerberg has mentioned in a blog post that he wants users to connect with more meaningful posts and this inadvertently translates to a drop in public content. He further assured that this is a good move in the long term and will also help the entire community and the business.
“Video and other public content have exploded on Facebook in the past couple of years. Since there’s more public content than posts from your friends and family, the balance of what’s in News Feed has shifted away from the most important thing Facebook can do — help us connect with each other”- Mark Zuckerberg
In a nutshell, Facebook is working to prioritise your personal moments and the posts you like to engage with on the news feed. With this tweak in place, I personally feel that the business owners will also be able to achieve a better “quality” of engagement. Recently a blog post titled “Is Spending Time on Social Media Bad for Us” sparked some debates. According to the research students who passively consume 10 minutes of News Feed content reported feeling worse at the end of the day.
Facebook has already made several changes to its News Feed. In fact only a month ago Facebook announced how it plans to put a clamp on engagement-bait spam posts. On a related note, the company is also expected to reveal a video chat device named Portal in the first half of 2018.
