Asus’ new Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 5Z Feature an iPhone X-Like Design and Dual Cameras

It’s no secret that Apple’s iPhone lineup every year inspires a range of other phones and when the company introduced the iPhone X, we sort of anticipated OEMs will be following suit in no time. Asus has decided to be one of them this time and its new Zenfone 5 series is a clear representation of that.

The company today the wraps off three new phones at the Mobile World Congress, two of which are the Zenfone 5 and the 5Z. The most striking feature of both of these is apparent as soon as you look at them. The phones are blatant ripoffs of the iPhone X and in its defense, the Taiwanese manufacturer says they borrowed it because it’s the best manifestation of the bezel-less design so far.

The Zenfone 5 and 5Z, apart from the specifications, are mostly identical. Both of them come with a 6.2-inch 19:9 display up front with a resolution of Full HD+, run on Android Oreo with the company’s own skin on top and flaunt an all-glass exterior. The camera arrangements are the same as well. On the rear, you’ll find a primary optically stabilized 12-megapixel sensor paired with an 8-megapixel wide-angle one. Together, let you add bokeh effects to your pictures and portraits. There’s an 8-megapixel selfie camera as well.

The Zenfone 5 is powered by a Snapdragon 636 quad-core processor, while the 5Z gets the latest Snapdragon 845. There’s 4/6GB of RAM, 64GB internal storage on the Zenfone 5 and 8GB RAM, 128GB storage on the 5Z. There’s a USB Type-C port on the bottom and both of them feature NFC, Bluetooth 5.0 as well. One of the key highlights of the new Zenfone 5 is stereo speakers which are paired with dual smart amplifiers that ensure the output doesn’t distort at higher volume levels. It also supports DTS Headphone:X™ for 7.1-channel virtual surround-sound over headphones.

In addition to the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, you can also unlock the new Zenfone 5 and 5Z with your face. Moreover, the software is loaded to the brim with artificially intelligent smart features such as the screen can automatically adjust the color temperature based on the ambiance, the camera can fine tune for various settings for you, the gallery app suggests filters and more. The design is not the only aspect the Zenfone 5 duo rips off from the iPhone X. They also come with something called “ZenMoji” which is essentially Asus’ variant of Apple’s Animoji.

Asus has also bundled a nifty charging feature which can be a boon for people who plug their phones overnight. Jargon aside, it essentially ensures the battery doesn’t overcharge and based on your sleeping schedule, tops it up in sessions. So for instance, if you wake up at 6 AM, the software will pause the charging process till the phone is at 80% and resume sometime around 5 AM.

The Asus Zenfone 5 and 5Z will be available sometime later this year in two color options — Midnight Blue, and Meteor Silver. You can read more about the phones in our first impressions. The Zenfone 5Z has been priced aggressively at 479 Euros and will go on sale globally from June 2018.
